In recent years, the functions and performance of products such as automobiles, information technology equipment and cellular phones – items that drive the development of Japanese economy – increasingly depend on the quality and performance of the installed software (embedded software). Development requirements and the importance of embedded software will continue to expand in the future.
However, effects on enterprise management are being seen, such as engineer shortages, the magnification and complication of recent development scale and an increase in software problems. In addition, offshore development in other countries in Asia such as China and India is increasing and there are concerns over the de-industrialization and deterioration of Japan’s software technology.
The strengthening of the global competitiveness of the software industry is an urgent issue for Japan to accomplish continual economic growth. Fortunately, there are excellent universities, information technology equipment manufacturers, small and medium information system companies and special schools in the Kansai region. There is great potential for the software industry. Moreover, Kansai has a major advantage in that it has a good relationship with other countries in Asia, where the globalization of software development is advancing.
Leveraging these strengths, the Embedded System Industry Promotion Organization was established to make Kansai a major hub of industrial-academic-government collaboration.
The purpose of this organization is to plan and operate services.
